What is Title I? 

• Title I is the largest federal assistance program for schools.
 
• The goal of Title I is to help all children get a good education.
 
• Title I helps students, teachers, and parents.
 
• Title I serves children in elementary, middle, and high schools.

How does Title I operate in New Bedford?

• The Preschool component serves a maximum of 200 children in 2 sites across the city.  Beginning February 27, 2012 applications for September 2012 will be accepted for children who will be four years old by September 10, 2012 and reside in New Bedford.  The program concentrates on the development of readiness, social, emotional, and physical skills.  Visit the Preschool Page to learn more about the program. • At the Elementary level, Title I assistance is provided in all twenty elementary schools to raise student achievement. Most schools have class size reduction teachers to support students. The grant also supports the District's use of ExtraLearning Online, a technology mediated instruction program. Teachers in all elementary schools have the opportunity to participate in professional development sessions to build capacity.

• At the Middle School level, Title I supports students in the following manner:
  
  
  1. Two Math teachers work in each middle school to reduce class size.
  2. Two English teachers work in each middle school to reduce class size.
  3. One Academic Coach in each middle school to support teachers in best practices and integrate content area curriculum.
     
     
• At the High School level, Title I supports students in the following manner:
  
  
  1. Three Math teachers work at the high school to reduce class size.
  2. Three English teachers work at the high school to reduce class size.
     
     
• The Parent Program involves parents in the educational process.  The Parent Program works cooperatively with the local school district.
