A YEAR-BY-YEAR
TEAM HISTORY
The New Bedford High School
Boys Volleyball program was started in the fall of 1986. It was part of
an expansion in the athletic department, which also saw the addition of girl’s
soccer. In fact, it was a petition by a group of girls who wanted a
soccer team, which prompted Athletic Director Richard Ponte to seek a new
program for boys. With the school already sponsoring boy's soccer, and
the memory of the men's Olympic success --- boys’ volleyball became a reality. From a very
uneventful start, which saw only eighteen boys try-out for (and make) the first
team, the NBHS boys volleyball program has developed into one of the strongest
programs in the state. They have developed a "tradition of
excellence" with their aggressive, high intensity style of play.
