The first
volleyball match took place on September 20, 1986 versus Amherst High
School as part of a tri-match at Holyoke High School. New Bedford lost
14-16, 9-15.

The first point
ever scored was on a service ace by Scott DeRossi (9/20/86).
·
The first varsity
win took place on October 7, 1986 versus Chelmsford High School at
NBHS (New Bedford won 5-15, 15-10, 15-11).

The longest bus
ride to play a regular season match was to Wallingford, CT versus Choate
Academy. New Bedford lost 6-15, 15-8, 11-15 following a 3 hour and 30 minute
trip.

The tallest
New Bedford High player was Al Ramos, 6'7" (94). The shortest
was Be Nguyen, 4'11" (95). During 1994 they often substituted for
each other front and back row.

The most exciting
game comeback was versus Lowell High School on 4/18/90. Down 7-14 in
the third game New Bedford came back to win the match 15-5, 11-15, 16-14.

The most exciting
match comebacks… #1 at undefeated Catholic Memorial during the South
Sectional Semi-Finals 2006. Down
0-2 in games NB had to comeback from big deficits in all three remaining games
to win 21-25, 15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 18-16. #2 was versus Braintree High School at Bentley College
in the State Finals 1991. Down 0-2 in games, New Bedford came back to win
their second State Championship 10-15, 9-15, 15-4, 15-6, 15-6.

The longest
winning streak started in March 1993 and ended in June 1996. It
lasted for 92 matches. The second longest streak lasted for 55
matches. The streaks were separated by a single five-set loss in the 1996
State Finals. During the 7-plus-season stretch the Whalers won 147 matches and
lost only one

New Bedford Boys
Volleyball team was selected "Team of the Month" in the national
magazine Volleyball Monthly (9/1987) and selected in Volleyball
magazine (11/1997).

During 1995 both
Coach Steve De Rossi and player Tim O’Brien were honored in Volleyball
magazine’s “For The Record” section.

On April 25, 1990
New Bedford High played an exhibition scrimmage versus Lycee Du Gresivaudan
Meylan. This French high
school team was traveling Massachusetts on a cultural exchange. The Whalers lost the scrimmage, but
gained a new appreciation for the intense, aggressive higher level of play…
that has become a New Bedford trademark.

On March 30, 1995
NBHS played an exhibition scrimmage at Atlantic Union College versus a high
school team from Mount Vernon, Ohio. NB won 3 of 4 games played during the scrimmage versus the
Mount Vernon team, which had been one of Ohio’s top teams the season
before. The experience helped to propel
the Whalers to their 3rd straight undefeated season and 3rd State Championship
versus Andover on June 16, 1995
