CELL MEMBRANE PROJECT DIRECTIONS

Purpose:  To use creativity in creating a cell membrane model.
To demonstrate the ability to interpret written information and transfer that
                              information into visual models.
To allow visual learners to create their own learning experience.
To be able to individually manipulate information.
        Materials Needed:  construction paper (18"x11")
colored paper in yellow, blue, purple, green and red
                                      scissors
                                      glue
                                      textbook (p.56)
Directions:  Cut out the following structures based on the shapes indicated in the textbook (Biology
Principles and Explorations) diagram on p.56:
                          Phospholipid molecules - yellow paper
                          Channel proteins - blue paper
                          Receptor proteins - purple paper
                         Marker protein - green paper
                          Carbohydrate chain - red paper
Arrange the prepared molecules, in a fashion similar to the diagram in the book, on the
18"x11" paper. The arrangement of cell surface proteins may vary from the pattern in the
book - however you must have at least two of each type of protein. The title must be at
the  top of the diagram in bold print and underlined. There should also be a color coded key
in the upper left hand corner of the diagram.
Please sign your name on the back of the 18"x11" construction paper.

SOLAR SYSTEM PROJECT DIRECTIONS:

Directions:  Each group of 2 to 4 students will be assigned one planet in our solar system which
will include any moons or other satellites of that planet as well. All members of each
group will be expected to contribute equal amounts of time and effort. One student from
each group will be assigned as group leader. It will be this student's responsibility to
divide the workload evenly between each member of the team and to coordinate the
group effort - at the end of this project the group leader will evaluate each member of
the team. Work to be done on each planets will include but not be limited to - the physical
make-up of the planet, the atmosphere surrounding the planet, rotation and revolution times,
satellites, a 3-D model of the planet and its satellites. All information will be presented
orally by the individual responsible for that particular area.

GEOLOGY MURAL PROJECT:

Click here for actual student murals

PURPOSE:  To visually illustrate the major topics of plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes.

MATERIALS:  Poster board or Mural Paper
                               Magazines
                                Colored Pencils
                                Earth Science Text
                                Access to computers and internet
                                Scissors
                                Glue
                                Construction Paper

PROCEDURE:  Divide Class into three groups.
Assign a group leader to each of the groups for the purpose of assigning tasks to
                                        individuals and coordinating project.
Various members of the group must be assigned the following tasks:
                                        -Internet research of topic
-Research scientists who have made discoveries and contributions to the present
                                            information on each subject
-Draw pictures of the major concepts
-Include maps or other related diagrams
-Include a brief written explanation to go with each drawing or picture
-Research books available in school resource centers for each topic
Title of the topic should be at the top of the poster in bold letters and the names
of each member of the group should be listed on the back of the poster.
