Student Excellence
This premier and unique marine and aquatic education center's educational focus is to provide hands-on, inquiry based marine science educational experiences, aligned to the Science Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, to the entire learning community: students, teachers and community representatives.
Students:
- Raise NBPS Grade 5 Science MCAS scores
- Provide NBPS students with data driven science curricula correlated to the Massachusetts Science Curriculum Frameworks
- Provide all NBPS students, K-12, with hands-on, inquiry based marine science experiences – regular education, special education, English Immersion students
- Provide Pre-School students with hands-on , inquiry based marine science experiences – regular education, special education, English Immersion students
- Provide students with Saturday morning classes focusing on the marine environment
- Provide students with vacation week classes focusing on the marine environment
- Provide students with resources necessary to develop and complete Science Fair Projects
- Provide high school students with on-site marine science instruction from UMASS professors
- Establish a continuation of marine studies from elementary school through Graduate studies at UMASS Dartmouth/SMAST.
- Establish enrollment and matriculation procedures from NBHS to UMASS Dartmouth Marine Science Program
- Establish and provide student mentoring services utilizing NBHS students as peer tutors
- Establish a "Women In Science" Seminar
- Establish an elementary school science symposium to be held at Sea Lab
- Establish a middle school science symposium to be held at Sea Lab
- Establish a high school science symposium to be held at Sea Lab
- Establish field trip opportunities for out-of-district students (paid)
- Provide students with a Seismology Center for the study of world wide earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activities — in conjunction with Boston College and the Weston Observatory
- Provide a visiting lecturer's program for Advanced Learning students from area universities and colleges — Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Boston College, UMASS Dartmouth.
- Provide students with "product" oriented marine sciences curricula — such as: Water Analysis, Seismology, Global Tectonics, and Vocations in Marine Science
- Provide NBPS students with Massachusetts Boating Certification through the Massachusetts Environmental Police
- Provide NBPS students with Boating courses through the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-18
- Provide NBPS students with a traveling "touch tank" experience
- Familiarize NBPS students with the GLOBE Project, weather monitoring and data gathering/analysis and weather prediction
- Provide students with opportunities to monitor/analyze water quality of local waters using basic laboratory techniques
- Act as a conduit for field trips to local marine and aquatic facilities, such as: the Waste Water Treatment Facility, the Water Treatment Facility, the Hurricane Dike, Palmer's Island, etc
- Provide a six-week summer session for grades four through nine students
- Provide NBPS teachers with a resource center focusing on the marine sciences
- Provide students with aquaculture information/techniques
- Provide students with the opportunity to observe marine and aquatic specimens in an aquarium setting
- Teach students how to set-up, stock and maintain an aquarium
- Provide students with information on career opportunities in the marine sciences
- Provide students with technology resources for research in marine science
- Introduce "marine robotics and technology" into the existing science curricula
Provide students with the opportunity to build an MIT “Sea Perch” Remotely Operated Vehicle
