Hello Hannigan Families!

I am thrilled to be the next principal of the John Hannigan School.  I have been reading about the rich history of the school and look forward to meeting all of you, very soon.  I will tell you a little about myself and hope that you will share some information about yourself and family, once school begins.

While I am new to New Bedford, I am not new to education.  I spent eighteen years working in Fall River at Atlantis Charter School.  I was principal for six years and taught grades three, four and five for twelve years.  This past year, I worked for SchoolWorks, an organization contracted through the Massachusetts Department of Education.  I visited other Gateway cities in MA, highlighting their successes and helping them with their areas of challenge.  Most were Level 4 schools and were involved in a Turnaround Plan.

I am excited to share our Hannigan space with Sea Lab.  This school building houses a wonderful science exploration center and the students in the City of New Bedford are lucky to have the opportunity to attend lab classes in this facility in grades four and five.  Hannigan students share this amazing space.  I welcome our Kindergarten, now First Graders from Gomes School.  We will begin together.

I hope that many of you will join us for an upcoming Open House and other opportunities to come into Hannigan.  We will be working with the new Welcome Center to ensure that you are feeling welcome and are able to get a chance to see the space where your child/ren come to learn.

This is a true community school and we will all grow and learn together.  I will be sharing, monthly, updates, plans, ideas and opportunities to come into our school.  CORI checks will be required for volunteers and more details will be coming regarding how to obtain your CORI (background) check.  We welcome volunteers, both at the school and those of whom able to help out with projects at home.  We are all teachers of our students and I cannot wait to meet you and share the plans we have for this year.

Please feel free to call or email me with any questions or concerns you may have.  I can be reached at (508) 997-4511, ext. 2921 or kkennedy@newbedfordschools.org

Together in Education,
